Knocking off 5A-I powers does not seem to be a problem. But
these 5A-II schools have been giving Mountain View fits.
One week after dismantling then-third-ranked Gilbert of 5A-I,
the host Toros had their hands full against 5A-II Sunnyside.
The Toros' only loss of the season came against 5A-II No. 1
Peoria Centennial in the season's first week. On Friday night,
the Toros (4-1) needed a 5-yard touchdown run by Micah Yetter
with 2:19 left to earn the win.
"They did some things to us defensively that slowed us down
for a little while," Mountain View coach Tom Joseph said.
"Eventually, we got some big plays. When we have to (get a
score), we just go right down, so that's nice to see."
The Toros led 14-7 midway through the fourth quarter, but the
Blue Devils refused to give in. Jamie Valdez connected on five
straight first-down passes, the last one to Patrick Medina
from 16 yards out to knot the game at 14 with 5:03 remaining.
But Yetter's run capped a well-manufactured drive, ending
Sunnyside's upset bid.
"That's a very good team that's probably going to be really
close to a state championship in 5A-I, so our kids have
nothing to be ashamed of," Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez
said.
